Tourists can apply for permit for next two days, from the current date. National Green Tribunal has ordered 400 diesel vehicles and 800 petrol vehicles to go to Rohtang Pass on a daily basis. Vehicles have to pay Permit fee and Congestion charges, which vary depending on the kind of vehicles, to seek permit.

1. Rohtang Pass Permit

In you want to travel to Rohtang, a mandatory Rohtang Pass permit is required fot all visitors. You can also take a four-wheeler or bike your way to the pass. You will need to show a confirmation voucher or proof of hotel booking at one of your destinations. The pass costs 500 Rupees per head with an additional 50 Rupees which is charged as a congestion fee which is taken by the National Green Tribunal. The permits are also of two kinds, one is for up to Rohtang Pass only while the other is for travelling beyond this point. In case you want to book your permits offline, you can do so on a first-come-first-serve basis from the Tourist and Information centres on all days from 10:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

  • Take a day off for Rohtang. Leave for Rohtang early in the morning, as there are hundreds of others local tourist cabs visiting the pass and the narrow lanes gets jammed with traffic quickly
  • Difficult road, high altitude and low temperature of the area, Rohtang is best visited in daylight.
  • Carry woollens and snacks, if possible pack a hot tea or coffee too. It would be the most useful up there.
  • When renting snow clothes, compare the prices with those fixed by the government.
  • Take care of your health, altitude sickness is common here.

HRTC and HPTDC run deluxe AC and Non-Ac buses connecting the valley with north India. NH21 connects the city to Chandigarh and Delhi. Tourists can also travel with their own vehicles. Tourists enjoy the trip through the beautiful landscape with river Beas flowing on one side of the road. People also bike their way to the Pass but try this only if you are confident that you will be able to drive in hill areas.
